The key characteristics of a strategic mindset.

I wrote about the importance of strategic thinking for all emerging leaders and the impacts you might see if your organisation lacks strategic thinkers.  But what actually is a strategic mindset?

It’s a way of thinking and approaching problems focused on long-term goals, consideration of the broader context and implications of decisions, and seeking to create a sustainable competitive advantage.

Individuals with a strategic mindset are forward-thinking, proactive, and both big-picture and analytical in their approach. They understand how different elements within an organisation, and within the external environment connect to each other.

Here are some key characteristics of a strategic mindset:

  1. Future Orientation: Those with a strategic mindset are future-oriented and think beyond immediate concerns. They consider the long-term implications and consequences of decisions and actions, aiming to position the organisation for success in the future.
  2. Systems Thinking: Individuals with a strategic mindset have the ability to see the bigger picture and understand the interdependencies and interactions within complex systems. They analyse how various elements and factors within and outside the organisation influence each other and shape outcomes.
  3. Analytical Thinking: A strategic mindset involves a strong analytical ability to assess and interpret data, market trends, and other relevant information. It requires the capability to gather, analyse, and synthesise information to inform decision-making and strategy development.
  4. Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Those with a strategic mindset are skilled problem-solvers and decision-makers. They approach problems and decisions systematically, considering multiple alternatives, weighing risks and benefits, and selecting the most appropriate course of action to achieve strategic objectives.
  5. Customer and Market Focus: Individuals with a strategic mindset understand the importance of a deep understanding of customer needs, preferences, and market dynamics. They continuously monitor customer trends, competition, and market forces to identify opportunities and develop strategies that create value for customers and drive business growth.
  6. Adaptability and Agility: A strategic mindset embraces adaptability and agility in response to changing market conditions and emerging opportunities or threats. Individuals with a strategic mindset are open to adjusting strategies and tactics as needed to stay competitive and take advantage of evolving trends.
  7. Collaboration and Influence: Strategic thinkers understand the importance of collaboration and stakeholder management. They actively seek input from diverse perspectives.
  8. Innovation and Continuous Improvement: A strategic mindset embraces innovation and continuous improvement. Strategic thinkers encourage creativity, promote a culture of innovation, and seek out opportunities for process optimisation and organisational learning.
  9. Results Orientation: Finally, a strategic mindset is results-oriented. Strategic thinkers focus on achieving tangible outcomes aligned with the organisation’s strategic objectives.

Cultivating a strategic mindset involves developing these characteristics through learning, practice, and exposure to strategic thinking frameworks and experiences. It requires a combination of imagining what could be, doubting and questioning current thinking, being curious and experimental paired with problem-solving and analytical skills.  Being strategic alone does not make a great leader, but in combination with emotional intelligence, leadership skills and the development of a great culture, it can create the best chance of leadership and organisational success.
